Compleat Foodservice Invests £600,000 in Premium Cookie Production

The foodservice division of The Compleat Food Group is strengthening its position within the sweet bakery market after committing £600,000 to a new cookie production line at its Crewe manufacturing site.

The investment comes as the business responds to increased demand for premium cookies across both retail and foodservice channels, with consumers showing a continued appetite for more indulgent, higher-quality sweet bakery products.

Compleat Foodservice is already an established player within the sector, manufacturing cookies for some of the United Kingdom‘s largest quick-service restaurant brands and retailers. However, changing consumer expectations are creating an opportunity for the manufacturer to move further into higher-specification products.

The company said it is forecasting growth of almost 30% in value by March 2027, with the new Crewe line forming an important part of its strategy to meet that anticipated demand.

Once fully operational, the equipment will increase overall cookie output by more than 30%, significantly expanding both capacity and product development capabilities.

Larger, Filled and More Bespoke Cookies

Rather than simply adding more volume to the existing manufacturing operation, the new production line has been designed specifically with premiumisation in mind.

It will allow Compleat Foodservice to manufacture larger-format cookies, filled products and recipes containing a wider variety of inclusions. That could encompass increasingly elaborate products where texture, fillings, toppings and visual presentation are as important as traditional flavour combinations.

The equipment will also provide greater flexibility across product formats, sizes and recipes.

For Compleat, this means it can respond more quickly to changing customer requirements and develop bespoke products at greater speed and scale, an increasingly important capability as retailers and foodservice operators search for products capable of differentiating their bakery ranges.

The commercial director for Compleat Foodservice said the manufacturer was experiencing significant demand for cookies that are more premium, indulgent and visually impactful.

Customers, the company explained, increasingly want support in bringing these higher-quality products to market. The £600,000 investment is intended to provide the additional capacity and manufacturing capability needed to produce cookies delivering strongly across taste, texture and appearance.

The new line will complement Compleat Foodservice’s existing bakery operations rather than replace them, allowing the company to support customers across a wider spectrum of product formats, specifications and quality tiers.

It also forms part of the company’s wider growth strategy for its sweet bakery operations as consumer trends continue to evolve.

Higgidy Scores Brighton & Hove Albion Pie Contract

Elsewhere in the UK food manufacturing sector, Sussex-based Higgidy is taking its products into Premier League football after winning a tender to supply matchday pies to Brighton & Hove Albion.

The fresh food specialist has secured a contract with Sodexo, the football club’s culinary partner, to provide a range of products at the American Express Stadium, commonly known as the Amex Stadium.

The agreement will begin from August 2026 and will see Higgidy’s products available throughout Brighton & Hove Albion’s home matchdays during the coming season.

The contract represents a particularly fitting partnership given Higgidy’s Sussex roots, allowing locally manufactured products to become part of the matchday food and hospitality offering at one of the region’s highest-profile sporting venues.

Four Pies and a Sausage Roll Join the Matchday Menu

Higgidy will manufacture individual 200g pies across four different varieties, alongside a 200g sausage roll.

The range will feature a Steak & Onion Pie with Gravy, offering a traditional matchday option, alongside a Chicken, Ham & Leek Pie finished with a creamy white sauce.

Plant-based customers will be catered for through a Chickpea & Spinach Massala Pie with Tomatoes, while a guest flavour of Chicken Tikka Pie with Red Peppers will broaden the selection further.

Each of the pies will combine a shortcrust pastry base with a puff pastry lid, maintaining the recognisable premium positioning associated with Higgidy’s wider product portfolio.

The deal represents another expansion of the manufacturer’s presence outside conventional grocery retail and demonstrates the growing importance of foodservice partnerships for established consumer food brands.

Sodexo Deal Could Open Further Football Opportunities

The significance of the Brighton contract could extend considerably beyond the Amex Stadium.

Paris-headquartered foodservices business Sodexo works with a number of major professional football clubs across the UK.

Its portfolio includes partnerships involving clubs such as Fulham, Nottingham Forest, Newcastle United and Celtic, meaning a successful introduction of Higgidy products at Brighton could potentially provide a platform for expansion into additional football venues.

Large sporting venues offer manufacturers access to substantial volumes of customers concentrated within relatively short trading periods, but they also place considerable demands on production consistency, logistics and supply reliability.

Performing successfully in that environment could strengthen Higgidy’s credentials as it looks to develop its presence across the wider foodservice sector.

Building on an Established Retail Footprint

Higgidy already has extensive distribution across UK grocery and convenience retail.

Founded in 2003, the manufacturer supplies products through major retailers including Sainsbury’s, Waitrose, Ocado, Tesco, Co-op, Asda and Booths.

Its products can also be found through Amazon Fresh and Boots, alongside selected Londis and Budgens stores.

Securing a high-profile football foodservice contract therefore provides Higgidy with another route to consumers while reducing its reliance on traditional supermarket environments.

It also gives the brand an opportunity to introduce its products to customers in a setting where convenience, familiarity and indulgence play particularly important roles in purchasing decisions.

What Does This Mean for Food Manufacturing and Production?

Both developments demonstrate how food manufacturers are adapting their production strategies to capture growth beyond traditional mass-market products.

For Compleat Foodservice, the £600,000 Crewe investment illustrates the increasing importance of manufacturing flexibility. Rather than competing purely on volume, producers are being asked to accommodate more complex recipes, premium ingredients, fillings, inclusions, larger formats and rapidly changing customer requirements.

Equipment capable of switching between different product specifications can therefore become a competitive advantage, particularly as retailers and foodservice businesses demand greater product differentiation.

Higgidy’s Brighton contract highlights another important opportunity for manufacturers: diversification across sales channels.

Stadiums, hospitality venues, leisure destinations and large foodservice operators can provide established manufacturers with access to significant new audiences.

However, securing these contracts also requires production operations capable of delivering consistent quality at scale while meeting strict service and distribution requirements.

Taken together, Compleat’s investment and Higgidy’s foodservice expansion show that capacity alone is no longer the whole story. Modern food production increasingly requires flexibility, premium product development and the ability to manufacture effectively for multiple channels.

Conclusion

The latest moves from The Compleat Food Group and Higgidy demonstrate two different approaches to growth within the UK food manufacturing industry, but both are being driven by changing expectations around quality, convenience and experience.

Compleat Foodservice’s £600,000 investment at Crewe will give the manufacturer greater capacity while enabling it to produce larger, filled and increasingly sophisticated premium cookies as it targets almost 30% value growth by March 2027.

Higgidy, meanwhile, is taking its Sussex-made products into Premier League football through its new partnership with Sodexo and Brighton & Hove Albion, providing the manufacturer with a valuable opportunity to expand beyond its already substantial retail presence.

Whether through investment in more capable production technology or expansion into new foodservice environments, both businesses are positioning themselves for growth in a market where manufacturers increasingly need to offer more than volume alone.

Flexibility, premiumisation and access to new consumption occasions are becoming powerful ingredients in the recipe for future success.
