Harlech Foodservice Acquires Oren Foods in Strategic Expansion

In a move that strengthens its position as a comprehensive foodservice provider, Harlech Foodservice has officially taken over North Wales-based fruit and vegetable wholesaler Oren Foods

The deal, which secures the future of all 25 Oren employees, marks a significant chapter in both companies’ histories and promises exciting growth opportunities ahead.

A Proud Local Legacy Continues

Oren Foods, formerly known as Ffrwythau DJ Fruit, has deep roots in the Welsh community. Established 45 years ago by Dei and Cheryl Jones out of their greengrocers in Cricieth, the company has grown into a trusted supplier for schools, care homes, restaurants, and B&Bs across Gwynedd, Anglesey, and wider North Wales.

For the past 12 years, the business has been in the capable hands of their son, Gethin Dwyfor, who has played a pivotal role in expanding the brand’s reputation and reach. The acquisition by Harlech ensures that this proud local legacy continues, with the full Oren team offered roles on existing terms.

Harlech’s Managing Director commented that it’s something they were committed to from the very start of their discussions. By September, Oren will be fully integrated into their main site, and they are looking forward to welcoming their staff to their family.

Strategic Growth for Harlech

With the addition of Oren’s fresh fruit and vegetable range, Harlech fills a vital gap in its product offering.

The move aligns with the company’s longstanding ambition to be a complete range supplier, especially for its expanding client base across education, healthcare, and hospitality sectors.

The Harlech MD commented that adding fresh produce has been a key part of their strategy. It allows them to offer greater convenience and value to their customers, and to do so by partnering with a well-established, respected local business is the ideal outcome.

As part of the acquisition, Harlech also takes on Oren’s fleet of 12 delivery vans. Deliveries of fruit and vegetables to Gwynedd and Conwy schools have now been seamlessly integrated into Harlech’s existing school delivery schedules, streamlining operations and enhancing service across the region.

A Partnership Built on Shared Values

For Gethin Dwyfor, the decision to join forces with Harlech was one grounded in alignment of values and long-term vision. They explained that when they saw Harlech named one of the best places to work in the United Kingdom by The Sunday Times, it gave them the confidence that this was the right move.

It’s always been the dream to build this business with a clear succession plan and to keep it rooted in North Wales. A key condition of the deal was that the staff would retain their jobs – and Harlech gave that assurance without hesitation.

Dwyfor and the original management team will remain involved in the business under the new ownership. They are excited to continue their journey – just now as part of something bigger.

A Stronger Future for Welsh Foodservice

Founded in 1972, Harlech Foodservice has grown steadily over the decades and now boasts annual sales of £50 million and a workforce of 300 people.

What’s more, the acquisition of Oren Foods not only adds fresh produce to its range but also reinforces its commitment to supporting local employment, supply chains, and communities across Wales.

Conclusion

Harlech’s acquisition of Oren Foods is more than just a business transaction – it’s a powerful local partnership that preserves legacy, supports livelihoods, and elevates customer service in the foodservice industry.

With a shared focus on quality, reliability, and community, this collaboration sets the stage for a fresh new chapter in North Wales’ food supply network.
