Co-op Celebrates British Tomato Season with Fresh New Launches
In perfect timing with the arrival of British tomato season, Co-op has announced the launch of three new tomato SKUs that highlight both innovation and sustainability while championing local growers.
The releases are a bold step in meeting the evolving demands of consumers who are seeking quality, freshness, and eco-conscious choices in their everyday shop.
At the heart of the range is the new 400g ‘Best in Season’ pack, now available at £3.50. This standout offering showcases at least two different varieties of tomato in each pack, hand-picked by expert growers based in Essex, Cambridge, and Hertfordshire.
Rather than settling for a static selection, the varieties will shift throughout the season – guided by the growers’ expert insights into crop performance and flavour at any given time. It’s a concept that celebrates the dynamism of British farming and delivers peak flavour straight to the shelves.
Adding to the line-up are two new 225g packs under Co-op’s premium Irresistible range: ‘Sugardrop Tomatoes’ and ‘Piccolo’, both priced at £2.25 per pack.
Notably, Sugardrop tomatoes are a trademarked variety with a limited retail presence – currently sold by only two other retailers in the United Kingdom – making their availability in Co-op convenience stores a point of real differentiation.
Both SKUs are exclusively British-grown and will remain so throughout the tomato season, which runs until the end of August.
According to Co-op’s technical manager, the move underscores the retailer’s longstanding commitment to British agriculture. They expressed that as a convenience retailer and supporter of British growers and farmers, it’s important that they continue to champion home-grown produce on their shelves.
Furthermore, snacking tomatoes continue to grow in popularity, and their new offer celebrates the very best of the season while offering the breadth of choice and innovation that their members and customers are looking for.
Sustainability also takes centre stage in this launch. The new SKUs are part of the wider Irresistible range, which has recently undergone a packaging revamp. Co-op has transitioned away from plastic punnets towards recyclable cardboard bases with a recyclable plastic top seal – reducing plastic usage by an estimated 77 tonnes per year.
This initiative supports the retailer’s broader environmental goals while offering customers guilt-free convenience.
Conclusion
With its latest tomato range, Co-op is striking a fine balance between premium quality, sustainability, and home-grown goodness. By leaning into British seasonality, offering sought-after varieties like Sugardrop, and delivering it all in eco-conscious packaging, the retailer is giving customers every reason to snack smarter this summer.
As British tomatoes take centre stage through to August, Co-op’s newest additions are a celebration of flavour, farming, and forward-thinking retail.
