FAQs

What is a surface mount weighbridge and how does it work?

A surface mount weighbridge is a full plate weighing platform installed above ground rather than set into a pit. Vehicles drive straight onto the platform, where built-in load cells measure the total weight and send the reading to a digital display or software system.

What are the benefits of a surface mount weighbridge compared to a pit-mounted one?

Because the platform sits on top of the ground rather than inside it, surface mount weighbridges avoid the excavation, drainage, and groundwork needed for a pit installation. This can make them quicker and more cost-effective to install, while still delivering the same accurate vehicle weighing.

What ramps or access are needed for a surface mount weighbridge?

Since the platform is raised above ground level, ramps are used to allow vehicles to drive smoothly on and off. Depending on the model and site, these can be metal ramps or built-up site ramps, giving vehicles safe, gradual access to the weighing surface.

Where are surface mount weighbridges typically used?

They’re widely used at haulage yards, quarries, waste and recycling sites, agricultural premises, and manufacturing facilities where accurate vehicle weighing is needed but excavating a pit isn’t practical or desirable.

What vehicle types can be weighed on a surface mount weighbridge?

Surface mount weighbridges are available in a range of sizes and capacities, from models suited to light vehicles right up to full length platforms for HGVs and large commercial trucks. The right size for you will depend on the vehicles you need to weigh.

What installation or civil works are required for a surface mount weighbridge?

Installation is generally more straightforward than a pit-mounted system, as there’s no need for deep excavation. A firm, level base and appropriate ramps are typically all that’s required, and MWS can advise on the best setup for your site.

Are surface mount weighbridges suitable for dusty or harsh environments?

Absolutely! Models such as the Giropes BPGSM are designed to be easy to clean, making them well suited to dusty environments like quarries and waste sites, where keeping the weighing surface free of debris is important for accuracy.

Can a surface mount weighbridge also be installed in a pit if needed?

Some models, such as the Giropes BPPCE EVO, are designed with the flexibility to be installed either above ground or within a pit. This means you can choose the installation method that best suits your site, without changing the weighbridge itself.

How are surface mount weighbridges serviced and calibrated?

To keep your weighbridge performing accurately, it’s important to carry out regular inspections, keep the platform clean, and schedule routine calibrations. MWS offers UKAS and traceable calibration support to help maintain accuracy and compliance over the lifetime of your system. Learn more about our calibration services.

Can surface mount weighbridges be customised for specific sites?

Yes, indeed! Surface mount weighbridges can be tailored in terms of platform length, capacity, ramp configuration, and indicator or software requirements, making sure the system fits your site layout and operational needs.

Importance of Large HGV Weighing

Overweight trucks are more at risk of accidents as they cannot stop as they were designed. If the weight isn’t distributed properly, the truck can get off-balance, causing other roadway issues. This will also add to the wear and tear of the truck, leading to other issues down the road. There are other reasons that we don’t want our commercial trucks to be overweight limits, including damage to roads and bridges. That’s why weighbridge and lorry scales are so important; HGV weighing systems ensure that the roads are protected on all levels from overloaded trucks.

How to Weigh a Lorry

There are two ways to weigh a lorry – with axle weight pads or weighbridges. However, the loads can also be weighed before they are loaded onto the truck with pallet weights. Each box or container could be weighed and then added to make up the weight of each pallet.

While there are many reasons to use a weighbridge or lorry scale, it’s important to find a system that is best suited for their intended purpose.

These scales used to be very primitive but today use advanced technology. Software is combined with these large HGV weighing systems to keep track of a range of information and data to help factories become more productive.
