Arla Foods Offers Farmers £438m Sustainability Initiative

Arla Foods is investing £438 million into sustainability efforts in order to help farmers reduce emissions by 2030.

Next year, Arla’s 8,000 European farms’ milk prices from the cooperative will depend on their practices and contributions to environmental sustainability.

The co-operative is offering farmers points that they can redeem for rewards based on the sustainability practices they already do or plan to do in the future. The farmers receive points for every action they take on the model, which include but are not limited to feed efficiency, protein and fertiliser usage, use of biogas plants, biodiversity conservation, carbon farming practices and deforestation-free soy production.

“The Sustainability Incentive Model is a historical milestone in Arla’s transition to a more sustainable dairy. Going forward, the milk price Arla farmers will receive for their milk will not only depend on fat, protein and quality, it will also depend on their activities on sustainability”, said Arla chairman Jan Toft Norgaard.

Even though it is voluntary, 95% of Arla’s farmers have already registered their data in the 2022 Climate check.
